Bridge Navigation Watch Alarm System

A bridge navigational watch alarm system (BNWAS) is an automatic system that monitors bridge activity, the watch officer, and backup navigators if the officer becomes incapacitated. The system can also alert other crew members and the ship’s master if the initial alarms are not acknowledged. BNWAS is a critical safety feature, especially in one-man bridge operations, as it helps prevent accidents caused by a watch officer’s lack of response.

Anti Spoofing and Jamming

Gyrocompass

Gyrocompass is a navigational instrument that determines true north by utilizing high-precision gyroscopes, such as fiber optic gyros (FOG) or traditional spinning-mass gyros. Unlike magnetic compasses, which are susceptible to magnetic anomalies, a gyrocompass identifies true north based on the Earth’s rotation, aligning with the geographic North Pole. It provides constant and reliable heading information without dependence on external signals like GPS, which can be disrupted or unavailable.

Satellite Compass device that uses GNSS, often with two distance separated GNSS receivers, to calculate heading instead of using magnetic or gyroscopic heading.

AIS

Automatic Identification System and was first established as an anti-collision tool for shipping. Vessels with AIS transponders on board transmit dynamic information about their own identity, speed and course to nearby ships via VHF, and enable them to receive the same type of information from vessels nearby. The AIS information is supplementary to the radar-based information that vessels receive.

GNSS

Global Navigation Satellite System receiver is able to calculate position, velocity and time by receiving the satellite signals broadcasted from multiple navigation satellite systems. Previously, GPS, operated by the United States, was the representative positioning system, but now other satellite navigation systems such as GLONASS of Russia, Galileo of Europe, BeiDou (Compass) of China are now in operation or are about to start operation.
